Do You Refrigerate Your Apple Cider Vinegar Or Store It Outside?

Today’s generation is always on the lookout for the “next best thing” for better health. Currently, apple cider vinegar has emerged as a functional beverage with an antioxidant effect and is touted as the superfood or super drink that is enjoying the spotlight.

Vinegar has a long history that dates back to 3000BC. The earliest known vinegar is likely to have formed when wine was exposed to air, and wild yeasts caused it to ferment. Vinegar can be made from any carbohydrate source that contains enough sugar to ferment into the alcohol needed to make acetic acid. The micro-organisms that carry on this fermentation are called acetobacter.

Just like how yeast converts sugars in grape juice into alcohol, which is later fermented by acetobacter into acetic acid, resulting in grape vinegar, apple cider vinegar is made by a similar fermentation process.

Apple cider vinegar is formed through the dual fermentation process of raw apples. A slower, more natural fermentation period occurs over the course of weeks and allows for the accumulation of the ‘mother’. The mother is a golden brown, a strand-like substance that appears like a cobweb settled at the bottom of ACV. While the standard white vinegar contains 4-7% acetic acid, apple cider vinegar contains 5-6% acetic acid.      Acetic acid which is the prime component of ACV is responsible for its tart flavour, pungent odour and is what makes apple cider vinegar ideal for many health, skin, and hair related benefits.

The most beneficial apple cider vinegar is natural, unpasteurized, unfiltered and made from the whole produce like that of AS-IT-IS apple cider vinegar.

Apple Cider Vinegar Boasts Endless Array Of Health & Beauty Benefits

Essentially, apple cider vinegar is marketed for its detox and digestive benefit, although it boasts beauty benefits like treating acne, reducing signs of aging and imparts shine to hair and so on.

Detoxification is a way of getting your body to do the things it should be doing more efficiently. Apple cider vinegar accelerates this process by flushing out your system and giving your body a fresh start. Consuming a tablespoon of ACV diluted with water on an empty stomach daily will help replace all those toxins with vitamins, minerals, and enzymes.

Delayed Stomach Emptying – Apple cider vinegar has the anti-glycemic effect which prevents the digestion of starch and controls blood sugar spikes. It also reduces the rate at which food leaves the stomach and enters the lower digestive tract. This slows down its absorption into the bloodstream. Through delayed gastric emptying, ACV promotes feelings of fullness, leading to a natural reduction in calorie intake.

How To Store Apple Cider Vinegar – Should You Place It Outside Or In The Fridge?

how to store apple cider vinegar

Till this time, all of us have heard and even practice adding vinegar to pickles and most food sources as a preservative. Now, the question is about how to preserve/store the vinegar – to refrigerate or not?  Sounds a bit strange, though not wrong in thinking so. Now, what do you understand by the word, ‘self-preservative’? It’s simple, one that can preserve itself, right? Let me put this word next to apple cider vinegar and ask you the same question. Apple cider vinegar is self-preservative. What does this mean? The same answer as above. ACV itself is a preservative and hence negates any need to preserve it. If you are not clear, don’t worry, I’ll give you a further explanation…

The acidity of ACV makes it a shelf-stable ingredient and effectively ensures that no bacteria, fungi or any pathogen will grow in it.

The Best Way To Store Apple Cider Vinegar

  • The best way to store ACV is in its original airtight container. Just keep in mind the bottle of vinegar is tightly closed when not in use. Exposure to air will allow the dust particles or pathogens to enter the bottle, which may deteriorate the liquid.

  • Since vinegar is sensitive to heat, it is recommended not to store it near the stove or the warm side of the fridge. Store the bottle of ACV in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight to keep the quality and flavour.

  • Don’t dilute the vinegar. The reason why apple cider vinegar is self-preserving is due to its acidity level. If you dilute it, it will cause the acidity level to decrease and it won’t be shelf-stable. Just dilute it when you consume it on a daily basis.

  • It is not necessary to refrigerate ACV, however, you may refrigerate it if desired or in case you dilute it.
