To increase muscle protein synthesis, you need four things working together: progressively harder training, enough protein at each meal (not just enough for the day), adequate total calories, and enough sleep. Skip any one of these and the other three can only do so much.

Lifting heavy damages muscle fibers, and repairing that damage is what drives protein synthesis up in the first place. The catch is that your body adapts. Train hard enough to keep asking something new of your muscles, spread real protein across three or four meals instead of one, eat enough total calories to support the process, and don't treat sleep as optional.
